You’re staying at a nice hotel with your family during the holidays and you receive a call from someone claiming to be at the front desk of the hotel. They are alerting you that there is a problem with your credit card information and that they need you to confirm some information to process payment. Seems legit, right? WRONG!

Scam

Identity thieves are calling this the “Front Desk Scam” and it’s an easy way for them to get a hold your personal information. You might be making it even easier for them.

HOW TO AVOID GETTING SCAMMED

  • Do not post your exact position on social media (no room numbers)
  • Investigate credit card problems in person at the front desk
  • Don’t give out personal information over the phone.

Major hotel chains have responded to these attacks by explaining that any problems with payment are addressed at check in. Hotels simply will not call your room to discuss payment, it is seen as unprofessional.

Some scammers can be very convincing and trick you into giving your information, creating urgent situations that require your credit card immediately. Always keep in mind that this is a clever tactic for attackers and that it is probably a trick to get your personal data.

When discussing your personal information, never be afraid to ask lots of questions and get confirmation of who you’re speaking to.
